NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana is being considered for a General Electric training center, which could bring several hundred jobs to the state, according to Rep. Steve Scalise.
Scalise, R-Louisiana, said he met Monday in Washington with GE chief executive Jeff Immelt and other company officials, to discuss the state’s chances.
“We had some good conversations about the prospects of them bringing a couple hundred jobs to the New Orleans area,” Scalise said.
An email seeking comment from a GE spokesman was not immediately returned.
Scalise said no specific timetable was given by the company.
“Hopefully we’ll get a decision real soon from them,” Scalise said. “We’re definitely in the hunt.”
He could not give details on the prospective location for the training center, but said it would likely be in the southern Louisiana region.
He said the possibility of the major company locating here is a sign of improving business conditions in the state and changing corporate perceptions.
“I think, in general, people have a positive feeling about some of the things that are happening in Louisiana,” Scalise said. “I think the fact that we are a finalist shows they are taking seriously the business climate that has improved over the years in Louisiana.”
