Second line for Lionel Batiste set for Friday

NEW ORLEANS -- A second line to honor Lionel Batiste, the cultural icon and drummer for the Treme Brass Band who died Sunday from cancer at the age of 80, will be held Friday.

The second line begins at Tuba Fats Square, at the intersection of St. Philip and North Robertson streets, and ends at Sweet Lorraine’s Jazz Club at 1931 St. Claude Ave.  The second line begins at 4 p.m.

Following the second line, a benefit will be held at Sweet Lorraine's in honor of Batiste, including local performers Kermit Ruffins, Kid Merv, Michael Baptiste, Deacon John, Danon Smith and Michael Ward. The show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Details have not been released regarding the funeral second line for Batiste.

A memorial fund has been set up for Uncle Lionel Batiste at Liberty Bank and Trust. Donations can be made to the fund by going to any branch. If you have any questions please contact Glenda McKinley at 504-915-1552.
