Sen. Landrieu defends Medicaid deal for La.

WASHINGTON  -- Called a prostitute by conservative talk show hosts, a Louisiana Democrat on Thursday defended a deal she cut for her Hurricane Katrina-ravaged state in the Senate health care bill.

Sen. Mary Landrieu insisted the Medicaid boost worth $300 million wasn't the price for her vote for President Barack Obama's sweeping health care plan and she noted that state Republicans backed the deal. Defiantly, she said she would do it all over again if she had to.

"I don't need this job badly enough -- maybe some people do, I don't -- to throw the people of my state under the bus to protect myself politically," Landrieu said in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor.

The deal has been derided as the "Louisiana Purchase" and conservative talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have both labeled Landrieu a "prostitute" for obtaining it.

In recent weeks, Obama has also alluded to messy dealmaking as a reason for public skepticism about the health care bill. He referred in his State of the Union speech to "lobbying and horse-trading" and told ABC News earlier, "It's an ugly process and it looks like there are a bunch of backroom deals."

Obama hasn't referred specifically to Landrieu's deal and Landrieu said Thursday that the administration supported it. She said she'd spoken several days ago to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and that Sebelius remained supportive.

Spokesmen for Sebelius and for the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Landrieu's comments came as House and Senate leaders met with Obama at the White House to try to find a way forward for the health bill, which remains stalled after Democrats lost the 60th vote they need to advance legislation in the Senate. Republican Scott Brown was being sworn in Thursday afternoon to replace the
late Democrat Edward M. Kennedy after his upset win in Massachusetts last month.

Landrieu said it was unclear what would happen with the health legislation, which passed the House and Senate separately last year but has yet to be written in final form, but said she wanted to protect her deal.

"I don't want what's been said erroneously and inappropriately to harm the efforts of this actually being included in whatever final version there may or may not be, so hopefully this will clear the air and this issue will stand on its own merits," Landrieu said.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana stood to lose federal reimbursements for Medicaid, the federal-state health insurance program for the poor, because the state's post-hurricane economic surge temporarily boosted per-capita income that's used to measure Medicaid payments. Louisiana's Republican governor, Bobby Jindal, was among those joining Landrieu in pushing for more money but since then he's avoided most opportunities to defend her.

Conservative activist James O'Keefe cited the deal as a rationale for his recent attempt to capture hidden camera footage in Landrieu's New Orleans office. O'Keefe and three others were arrested Jan. 25 in the incident. O'Keefe has said the group wanted to investigate complaints that constituents calling Landrieu's office couldn't get through to criticize her support of the health overhaul bill.

Landrieu said the incident was not the reason for her public comments.

"What I said about the gentleman that's rattling off is he should save his excuses for the judge. He's going to need them," she told reporters after her speech.

Landrieu's defiant stance stands in contrast to that of another moderate Democrat, Nebraska's Ben Nelson, who also negotiated a Medicaid deal for his state, the so-called "Cornhusker Kickback." So much controversy surrounded it that Nelson ultimately asked for it to be withdrawn, even while insisting that he never wanted
anything special for Nebraska. Nelson's deal would have protected Nebraska in perpetuity from the cost of a Medicaid expansion whereas Landrieu's was to be a one-time deal.

So Mary L. checked with Clarabelle Sebelius so it's okay? Louisiana politics as usual. The third oldest profession seems to resemble the oldest profession.

maybe, mary, you should resign and let some else to this job. because your vote went against most of the louisiana citizens. because nothing has been explain what this new insurance will cover, and what the out of pocket money will be and what is the price the people have to pay. the real price. and are we going to socialism ,that when the government owns and runs the health system.

Excuse me, people! Mary Landrieu had no complaints when she finally got Washington to agree to category 5 hurricane protection, nor have we heard complaints for the numerous other good things she has done for this state, and specifically the New Orleans area.. Yet she does one thing that is foolish and we suddenly call for her removal?? She has fought for this state for years and USUALLY accomplished wjat she fought to get for us, yet she is an idiot once and suddenly you do not like her? Get real!!!

I want to hear Jindal's side of the story. Oh, by the way, why couldn't the 300 million be paid out to each citizen of the U.S.? That is-1 million to each legal resident? I think the nation would be in a lot less debt.

Sounds to me like Mary's doing her job, getting everything she can for the people that elected her. I don't really care what people in other states have to say, and especially not a dirtbag pain-killer addict who will say anything to keep his ratings up, the Jerry Springer of talk radio.

maybe she will defend nagin and his buddies buying tickets and going to miami on our dime also. she needs to go but is not up till 2014, i just hope we all have a good memory when she is up for re-election, jendal did not tell her to hold out on voting for the bill until she brought home the money, he is against the healthkill bill also. i just hope mitch, if he wins, dont follow in her foot steps and sell himself to the highest bidder.

renokid and macarpen, you should care what the rest of us in the other states think. The next time a hurricane blows away your unprotected crackhouse, you might not get the outpouring of money from the rest of the states as you did with katrina. Making backroom deals such as the like of Landrieu's is disgusting, and if you weren't trying to perpetuate the idea of louisiana being a banana republic, you would realize her actions are not in keeping with the vast majority of louisiana residents' thoughts on the matter. Why don't both of you return to the 3rd grade and at least finish your primary education?

Mary is an idi0t. Now she says that the $300 Million wasn't payment for her vote for Obamacare? Palease!!!! We all saw her play the "hold out until I get what I want" game. She also wants to play the "they told me to do it" game. I've never voted for Mary because the Landrieu family has a history of buying the citizens' votes with government "nanny state" programs. Now we have "womb to tomb" generational welfare in the City of New Orleans, which costs the taxpayers of this state dearly. We don't want her earmarks, and we don't want her government handouts. The government owed this city big time when the Army Corp of Engineer levees, that we the taxpayers paid for, breached. I can't wait to vote her out in 2014.

WWL is afraid to show my posts!

What a total embarassment she was yesterday. She SOLD US OUT!!!!! She is a disgrace. She voted against what the majority of people in her state want. PERIOD!!! No matter how she tries to spin it. Also, the press is not reporting how she would not answer her phones at her office after this vote. WE THE PEOPLE are not going to sit byany longer. SHE MUST GO - too bad it is not until 2012. There has to be a viable candidate to go against her w/her corruption so deep rooted! Wake up and Stand up. It is time the people were in charge not politicians.

To: gladimnotthere: I think you are mistaken. I did not receive a dime from FEMA, or any other agency, because I had a job and rebuilt myself without any assistance. I am not on Medicaid, welfare or any other hand out programs. So it would not bother me if nobody gave us money to rebuild after the next hurricane-- I am self sufficient and none of that money came my way anyway, so I will be fine (oh, and my insurance is paid up). I agree that what Landrieu did was wrong, but I am just saying everyone wants her ousted even though she has done a lot for her constituents. Now, as for my education- dear, I think I am University educated. Oh and I am from Pennsylvania, not Louisiana :-) I moved here 7 years ago (to further my furthered education) :-)

Mary was bought and paid for...business as usual in Washington. It's enough to make you sick.
