NEW ORLEANS -- Dr. Karen S. Collins, the fourth president and chief executive office of St. Augustine High School, has resigned, according to school officials.

Collins, who took over during a tumultous period of the school, which saw the of ouster the school's previous president that led to protests from students and alumi, resigned less than a year since taking over for the school.

Collins was named the school's first female president in June 2011. She was the principal in New Orleans at Frances Gaudet Elementary prior to Hurricane Katrina and principal of Sarah T. Reed Senior High School after the storm.  A reason for Collins stepping down by school officials was not given.

Collins took over the 7th Ward school after Father John Raphael was removed as the school leader. Raphael was reassigned to the Baltimore area. Raphael's term became embroiled in controversy over using corporal punishment -- often paddling -- on students, despite objections from Archbishop Gregory Aymond. Raphael joined many alumni, parents and even students in voicing support for the practice.
