The Blood Center will remain closed today, citing unsafe travel conditions for donors trying to make their way to help out.

The organization remains critically low on donations because of the two-day closure.

“We have had two days with no blood collected,” said Amanda Chittenden, the organization’s public relations manager. “At a time when blood donations typically decline, this has put the community blood supply at an unsafe and critical level.  We strongly urge donors of all blood types to donate this week to help us get the lifesaving blood components that are needed by our hospitals for their patients.  As a community, it is all of our responsibility to ensure a safe a stable blood supply.”

It’s the second consecutive day the center has been closed, leaving it in dire need. Tuesday, the organization said it must collect between 300-350 pints of blood each day.

Donors must be in good health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old. Sixteen year olds can donate, but only if they weigh 130 pounds and have signed a parental consent form.
