NEW ORLEANS - Businessman and real estate developer Darryl Berger is Tulane University’s choice as its permanent representative on the board governing the proposed New Orleans teaching hospital.
Tulane announced Berger as its choice for the board of the University Medical Center, as it is being called, in a Thursday morning news release.
Berger, a Tulane board member and graduate of the university's law school, is best known as the developer of the Jax Brewery in the 1980s. He and his partners also developed Canal Place, the Royal Orleans and Loews hotels, among other projects. Last fall, he and his family partnered with other investors, including members of the Archie Manning family, to purchase the Windsor Court Hotel.
In addition to Berger, the hospital board includes four members appointed by LSU, one by Xavier universities and one appointment from Dillard University, Delgado Community College and Southern University, to be rotated among each of those institutions.
Earlier this month, Gov. Bobby Jindal named shipbuilder Donald “Boysie” Bollinger and Metairie businessman David Voelker as his appointments to the board, along with Tim Barfield, who recently left a post with the Jindal administration, and Dr. Christopher Rich of Alexandria.
"Now that the governor has announced his proposed slate of non-permanent, independent trustees for the UMC Board, Tulane feels it is appropriate and desirable for the permanent members to announce their representatives," Tulane President Scott Cowen said in the university’s news release.
"Hopefully, the entire governing board will be seated as quickly as possible so this critical community project can move forward expeditiously," he added.
The nominees are subject to ratification by all of the permanent members of the board.
