HARVEY, La. -- Firefighters battled a two-alarm chemical fire in the 1200 block of Peters Road near the Harvey Canal Friday night.

A chemist at a bio-diesel plant, Gold Leaf Energy, was mixing chemicals in a container when there was a reaction and an explosion, according to Terry Thibodaux, Harvey Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief.

The chemist was killed as a result. His named has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Two cars were totaled in the blaze. Fire officials were quickly able to bring the fire under control.

No other injuries have been reported, although the victim was working with another man at the time.

Another worker outside the plant, who asked Eyewitness News not to release his identity, said he was saddened and in shock over the loss of his coworker.

He said the man had a wife and child.

Officials did not call any evacuations.  According to Parish President John Young, there was no chemical release from the explosion.

The investigation will be turned over to State Fire Marshal.
