NEW ORLEANS – Two people died after the vehicle they were riding in struck a utility pole and flipped over in the Ninth Ward, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Around 8:30 p.m., a witness observed a Ford Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Almonaster Boulevard, police said.

Moments later, the witness heard a loud crash and she immediately called police.

When officers arrived at the scene in the 4500 block of Almonaster Boulevard, they discovered that the car appeared to have struck a pole, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to flip over, according to the NOPD.

The driver, a 64-year-old man, was thrown onto the roadway. A woman remained trapped and seat-belted in the passenger's seat. Both were pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

Investigators worked to determine if speed was a factor.

No charges have been filed and a toxicology test will be performed, police said.
