CHALMETTE, La. -- Veterans and their families also gathered at the Chalmette National Cemetery to honor America's fallen heroes.

Volunteers placed American flags on every headstone.

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Tommy Rigsby said he has spent every Memorial Day since 1982 at the ceremony in Chalmette.

“When you share something with comrades at war time, you’re closer than brothers. You’re closer than family. Even after the war you may lose contact with each other, it doesn’t mean you don’t remember,” “And when one of our veterans falls, when one of them dies, it’s only natural to just want to pay homage to them.”
