THIBODAUX — A 59-year-old Thibodaux man allegedly struck a woman twice in the head with a hatchet during a domestic disturbance inside her home this afternoon, authorities said.
Melvin Jones, who had entered the woman's home on Lee Drive with her permission, grabbed a hatchet from her laundry room and said he had come to kill the 48-year-old woman, Lafourche sheriff's spokeswoman Lesley Hill Peters said.
The bloodied victim recounted the episode, which happened around 4 p.m., to detectives on scene. She is expected to survive.
Jones, of 100 Government Circle, is expected to be charged with attempted murder and DWI, Peters said, but has not been booked at the Lafourche jail, yet.
The DWI charge stems from when Jones allegedly tried to drive away from the woman's home. Deputies smelled alcohol on Jones' breath, Peters said.
