Billing repayments among list of demands from coalition to S&WB

Group presenting list of demands from S&WB

NEW ORLEANS – A group is planning to bring a list of demands to the Mayor’s office Wednesday about the Sewerage and Water Board, addressing items like billing issues and privatization.

At 2 p.m., the Sewerage and Water Board fight back coalition plans to hold a press conference at City Hall to lay out their list.

One of the demands, stopping the interruption of services for accounts with billing questions, was settled during a board meeting for the S&WB Wednesday morning.

The board decided to temporarily suspend shutting off water services for delinquent accounts until March 1, 2018.

The demands from the coalition were provided in an email to WWL-TV. They are listed as:

"1.    Immediately stop cutting off people's water when bills are disputed.  Restore water service to all people and levelize bills based on average use in 2015.  Reimburse people for overages.

2.   Hire New Orleanians to clean catch basis and to fill vacancies at Sewerage and Water Board.   Promote from within.  Support unionization.

3.   Cancel the contract with the outside law firm to fight people who have legitimate claims against the city, instead of just reimbursing the people for damages caused by the Sewerage and Water Board.  Invest the money in ways that actually helps the people.

4.   Start a people's oversight committee to oversee the reconstruction of the Sewerage and Water Board-no more blue ribbon commissions of appointees, no privatization!

5.   Pay reparations for damages caused to residents due to floods caused by City negligence."

The group invited residents to bring their bills and information about losses from floods in August to the Mayor’s office Wednesday.
