UPDATE: Causeway reopens after apparent suicide attempt

The southbound Causeway was shut down for 3 hours after a vehicle raced through the toll booths and then slammed into railings.

NEW ORLEANS -- The southbound lanes of the Causeway Bridge were closed Thursday morning after a driver ran through the toll plaza and crashed his car in an apparent suicide attempt.

According to Causeway officials, a driver drove through the toll plaza around 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 27. Causeway police pursued and the driver crashed into the railings on either side of the bridge before coming to a stop.

Authorities surrounded the vehicle and realized the driver had shot himself. EMS was called the scene and the driver was taken to University Medical Center. Officials said he is alive, but is in critical condition.

Detectives added the man had apparently fired several gunshots inside the vehicle before turning the gun on himself. It is unclear if he was firing at responding officers, but Causeway police said none of their officers fired any weapons during the incident.

Eyewitness news will update this story as it develops.
