A special nominating committee that submits names to Governor Bobby Jindal for membership on the regional flood protection boards is meeting on Thursday to reconsider the nomination of a key East Bank board member. That's the topic of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.
East Bank flood authority board member Paul Kemp is a nationally respected coastal scientist. He is easily the most qualified board applicant. His re-nomination should be a slam-dunk.
But Kemp also supports the levee authority's environmental lawsuit, which makes his nomination controversial. Gov. Bobby Jindal wants to kill that lawsuit by any means necessary. That includes replacing qualified board members with anyone who will follow Jindal's marching orders.
Folks, the big issue here is flood protection, not lawsuits. If the nominating committee gives in to political pressure, it will put hundreds of thousands of people at risk.
The flood authority needs independent experts like Paul Kemp, not lackeys who blindly follow orders.
