DuBos: Making Bourbon safer may require it lose it's 'anything goes' charm

Clancy's Commentary: Nov. 29, 2016

As we noted earlier, metal detectors are among the ideas being discussed for securing Bourbon Street during special events.

That’s the topic of this week’s Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

The headlines say it all: Bourbon the on the Rocks. Blood on the Street. And worse.

This past weekend’s mass shooting on Bourbon Street has left business and political leaders scratching their heads once again, wondering what to do about gun violence on tourist-heavy Bourbon Street.

Some suggest restricting access during special events, possibly with hand-held metal detectors at access points. That’s what Memphis does on its famous Beale Street, but Bourbon is much bigger, and much busier than Beale.

Still, something meaningful has to happen. We don’t need another crime summit. It’s sad but possibly true: Bourbon Street’s “anything goes” reputation is its main allure, but securing Bourbon may require making it less wide-open.
