NEW ORLEANS -- The NOPD released dashboard camera video of the shootout between a suspect and the police in August in the 7th Ward.
The video captured the exchange of gunfire, and it also captured the last moments of the suspect's life.
The video shows Bernie Porche running near Law and New Orleans streets and him firing about 10 shots at officers before he was hit by an officer returning fire.
After Porche drops, he then fatally shoots himself in the head.
Superintendent Michael Harrison said this is a harsh reminder of what officers face every day on the streets.
"This is what men and women in law enforcement are up against every single day. This is the mindset. Individuals with enhanced firepower who have it in their minds that they will shoot it out with someone who they do not like or with the police and they are willing to do whatever it takes to keep from going to jail,” Harrison said.
In the aftermath, a State Trooper was also wounded, getting shot in the arm.
“Their actions gave our officers no choice but to respond with deadly force,” said Harrison.
Harrison said he played the video for Porche’s family.
“They were very shocked, overcome with emotion but understanding and didn’t deny what they were seeing and what actually happened,” he said.
The trooper is still recovering from the gunshot wound to the arm.
Meanwhile, police are still looking for the two accomplices who were riding with Porche in a stolen car.
