NEW ORLEANS - Road construction on St. Bernard Avenue forced Catholic Charities to move July's Food for Families distribution of food boxes.
Those that normally pick up monthly food boxes at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart must go to the Lakefront Arena, officials said.
Distribution takes place Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. Registry can be done on site.
The Food for Families program serves low-income seniors who are 60 years and older.
"People need food to eat. And, especially in these economic times, every way they can stretch their food budget is important," said Tim Robertson, director of the Food for Families program.
The program gives out food in 64 parishes. In 2012, over 800,000 boxes of food were given out.
"Food is hard now, it's hard to find. Everything is going up, and I'm on fixed income. It helps me make my ends meet," a man at the Lakefront Arena on Tuesday morning told WWLTV.
Distribution may remain at the arena in August if construction does not permit it to return to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
