Haydel's warming ovens for Hubig's replacement

NEW ORLEANS – It’s been four years since a massive fire destroyed the Hubig’s Pie factory, leaving counters at corner stores and gas stations without the popular fruit-filled pies.

But now another bakery is preparing to fire up its ovens to offer an apparent replacement.

Haydel’s Bakery announced Friday that it will soon debut a “New Orleans Hand Pie.”

An image the bakery released on its Twitter account shows packaging similar and shape and size to what Hubig’s used to wrap its pies.

Haydel’s said it will have a soft launch of the new pies next week.

The families that own Hubig’s vowed after the fire to rebuild, but plans to make that happen, including building a new bakery, have been slow to develop.

The remains of the Hubig’s factory in the Marigny were torn down after the fire. A condo development named Baker's Row is now being built on the site.
