SLIDELL - Twenty people have been indicted in connection with an alleged heroin ring that operated primarily on the northshore, District Attorney Warren Montgomery announced Thursday.
The FBI, Pearl River and Slidell police departments and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office took part in the year-long operation. The northshore area has seen a nearly 500 percent hike in heroin-related deaths in recent years.
Of the 20 people who were indicted, 16 are currently in jail.
The majority of the arrests were made in Slidell, Pearl River and up through Bush, mostly in rural areas.
Law enforcement officials said the loosely-organized group was known as 'Team We.'
