METAIRIE, La. – After a woman pulled onto the shoulder of the interstate, she was fatally hit by two vehicles when she ran across the roadway to avoid her passenger who was assaulting her, according to the Louisiana State Police.
Around 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, several 911 calls alerted state police of a battery being committed on a woman on the right shoulder of I-10 near Veterans.
Lucretia Hampton, 35, of St. Bernard Parish, had pulled her Hyundai SUV over because her passenger, George Hampton Cummings IV, 39, of New Orleans, was assaulting her inside the vehicle, according to police.
After the pair exited the vehicle, the battery continued behind it and Hampton attempted to flee from Cummings by running east on the shoulder in an attempt to flag down cars to help her, according to police.
She ran across the right lane and then the center lane, where she was struck by two vehicles and died on the scene.
The first was a Chevrolet pickup driven by Rayford Corkern, 74, of Gretna, and the second was a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Joseph Causer, 25, of Metairie. No alcohol was detected on either driver and both were uninjured, according to police.
Cummings was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center for second degree battery and manslaughter.
