METAIRIE, La. - A man attempting to rob a convenience store at gunpoint early Saturday morning was shot by the cashier and fled the scene injured and without money, said the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 5:00 a.m. the suspect, who entered the gas station asking for cigarettes, pulled a gun on the cashier and demanded money from the register, according to deputies.

The cashier placed the money on the counter, then fearing for his life, armed himself with a handgun and shot the suspect in the upper torso.

The suspect fled the scene in his car with his handgun and without the cash.

Deputies responding to the 911 call located the driver, Melvin Phillips, 33, in his car suffering multiple gunshot wounds and with the gun next to him.

Phillips was treated for his non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital and was charged with one count of attempted armed robbery.

His gun was determined to a replica semi-automatic BB handgun.

The cashier faces no charges because he acted in self-defense, according to deputies.
