MARRERO, La. - A group of relatives and acquaintances of a Higgins student came on to school property with the intention of intervening in a possible altercation and were arrested when they refused to leave, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman John Fortunato said Wednesday.

According to Fortunato, Kiwana Dubard, the mother of a 16-year-old student, along with some other people, went onto the campus without authorization and refused to leave.

Fortunato said the school campus officer called to notify the sheriff's office. He said the campus officer was told the group was there because they thought Dubard's son was going to be involved in an altercation.

The officer confronted the group, who refused to leave and then resisted when officers tried to arrest them.

The Jefferson Parish school system issued a statement saying that safety is of the utmost importance and crediting officers with handling the situation. They said students were kept in the classrooms until the disturbance ended.
