Sheriff's negotiators in Jefferson Parish brought a peaceful end to a standoff with a man barricaded inside his home in Metairie this evening.

Three hours after the standoff began mid-afternoon in the 900 block of Bengal Road, 45-year-old Stephen Lopez  surrendered to deputies.

No one was hurt and no shots were fired.

JP Sheriff's Spokesman John Fortunato said the SWAT team scrambled to the scene after a 911 call from Lopez's sister.

She said Lopez had sent her a text message threatening suicide and warning police to stay away.

“He threatened violence against himself as well as the police,” Fortunato said. “That if anyone came in the house he was going to butcher them up.  It wasn’t going to end nicely.”

Fortunato said Lopez had several prior arrests, including one for battery on a police officer. But tonight he surrendered without incident.

Lopez was booked on a protective custody warrant
