GRETNA, La. - Saying the parish was much better protected than it was during Katrina, Parish President John Young advised residents who are staying for the storm to finalize their preparations and be prepared to be without power for some time.
Young emphasized that his biggest concern for areas outside of the levee protection system - Grand Isle, Lafitte, Crown Point and Barataria - is storm surge.
Concerns for those who are inside the system include: high waters, flying debris and power outages. He said that 10-15 inches of rain could fall in an area already saturated by a heavy few weeks of rain.
Sheriff Newell Normand said that residents should stay off the streets during the storm. He said people who ride around in the bad weather and in flooded streets would be challenged by police.
"If you create damage, you are going to jail," said Normand. "Do not drive around in neighborhoods creating problems for law enforcement... Stay inside, play Parcheesi."
