METAIRIE, La. — A man died beneath a garbage truck after a worker mistakenly began moving the vehicle with the man under it.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said the victim, identified only as a 57-year-old Jose Romero from Kenner, was working on the garbage truck when Dwayne Dillon, 40, began to drive it.

Dillon, according to JPSO, didn’t realize his co-worker was under the truck and immediately stopped the forward movement when someone flagged him down, alerting him to where his co-worker was.

The Romero was pronounced dead at the scene.

JPSO said the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office will be consulted in the case.
