METAIRIE, La.-- From Metairie Road to Magazine Street, small businesses are gearing up for their time in the holiday shopping spotlight. "Small Business Saturday" marks its third year across the country.
"It's tricky around the holidays here, but we've been really happy with business so far," said Christen Giardina, who manages the boutique "Bella Bella" on Metairie Road.
Giardina said, in recent years, the store has capitalized on the national movement known as "Small Business Saturday," where consumers are encouraged to shop in local, smaller stores.
"This year, we're doing 50-percent off of all jewelry," she said. "So, 'Small Business Saturday' is always normally better for us than Black Friday."
Consumers like Kate Padbury, who was out shopping on Magazine Street, said it was a matter of convenience.
"I don't want to fight the crowds," Padbury said. "So, if a local shop has something that I don't think I can find online, or I really like, I'll go there."
A recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses found that, when compared to last year, eight in 10 small business owners plan to make more money during this year's "Small Business Saturday.
The timing couldn't be more crucial. For many small businesses, the holiday season is make or break for their bottom line.
"In the last two months of the year, we do most of our business," said Jaime Parellada of Hyme Tyme on Metairie Road. "We've had a pretty decent year, so I'm kind of hoping that it continues through Christmas, and I think it probably will."
The National Independent Business survey also found that two-thirds of stores, who are participating in "Small Business Saturday," planned on offering discounts to shoppers on that day.
