AVONDALE, La. – A man attempting to cross the highway on Monday night was killed when he was struck by an SUV, according to Troop B of the Louisiana State Police.

Around 8:30 p.m., Donietha Luke, 36, of Marrero was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy east on U.S. 90 in the right lane.

Issac Casmere, 62, of Avondale, attempted to cross the roadway near Avondale Garden Road when he was struck by Luke’s vehicle, police said.

Casmere was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

No detectable alcohol was found in Luke’s system and speed is not considered a factor, authorities said. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Casmere’s toxicology test results are pending, police said.

Louisiana law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing and stay out of the travel lanes at all times.
