Burglary suspect dies shortly after arrival at Jefferson Parish Correctional Center

METAIRIE, La. -- A burglary suspect died after being taken to jail by Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called out the scene of a burglary in progress in the 300 block of Pasadena Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 9. The suspect, Garland Waites III, was located and arrested a few blocks away from the reported burglary after a chase.

Waites was then placed in the back of a police car for transport. A short time later, Waites experienced difficulty breathing and was examined by EMTs according to JPSO. He was medically cleared and put back into the backseat of the unit where he began having breathing problems again.

Deputies called EMS back, but Waites recovered and refused to be examined according to JPSO. Police put Waites in the back of a police van and transported him to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

Shortly after arrival, police found Waites unresponsive. Jail medical center personnel and Gretna Police Department EMS attempted to render aid, but Waites died on the scene according to JPSO.

Waites’ death is currently “unclassified” according to JPSO, pending the results of an autopsy.
