JPSO: Deputy shoots suspect, car crashed into canal

Spokesman John Fortunato talks about the deputy-involved shooting that injured a man, whose car then crashed into the canal.

A car with two people in it crashed into a West Bank canal Tuesday afternoon after a deputy shot one of the men inside, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

The crash happened on Wright and Cedarwood avenues. The shooting happened at a nearby gas station.

According to the JPSO, two men were in a Honda Accord parked at a gas station and had weapons in the car.Officers felt threatened and opened fire, said Col. John Fortunato, a JPSO spokesman.

The driver of car, Ryan Jackson, of Gretna, was shot in upper back and arm. He was taken to a nearby hospital with what is believed to be a non life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Officials said deputies found a semi-automatic handgun in the canal, which they believe Jackson threw out of the car.

Fortunato said the chase was related to a JPSO narcotics investigation.
