HOUMA, La. -- A 16-month-old Houma girl died Saturday after her mother backed an SUV out of the driveway and struck her, police said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Evelyn Ave. about 11:28 a.m., Houma Police said.

They learned a 1998 Jeep Cherokee driven by Sandra Lopez-Barragan, 30, was backing out of her driveway when her vehicle struck her child, Jayce Salazar, Houma Police said in a news release.

The child was transported to Leonard Chabert Medical Center, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash, police said.

Alcohol use is not suspected, according to the news release. No traffic tickets were issued, and no charges had been filed.

Police said an investigation was continuing.
