A minivan went up in flames late Saturday night as the driver was turning off Grand Caillou Road into the Ashland North subdivision, firefighters said.
The driver, Donna Castillo, was not injured. The 1994 Plymouth Voyager caught fire at about 11:20 p.m. as Castillo was turning onto Express Boulevard, authorities said. Castillo told firefighters she had smelled smoke while driving, and soon after saw flames trailing behind her.
Firefighters from the Grand Caillou and Houma departments put out the flames. Investigators believe a mechanical failure in the minivan's engine caused the fire to break out.
Under the hood of the minivan, a good portion of the engine had melted. The windows were blackened from the flames, and the passenger side front tire had blown out from the heat.
Castillo refused to comment after the fire.
