GRAY, La. (AP) -- Teens from across Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes will meet next month to discuss coastal protection and restoration issues.
The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center will host the Wetlands Youth Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the North Terrebonne Library in Gray.
Jonathan Foret, the Discovery Center's development director, tells The Courier (http://bit.ly/z8DppV ) that two student leaders from each high school in St. Mary, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes have been invited to participate in the summit. Organizers hope to make the summit an annual event.
The goal is to select one junior from each school to form a local Wetlands Youth Council that will meet quarterly in each parish to discuss community vulnerabilities and work out problems before next year's Wetlands Youth Summit.
