Police shoot, kill man in Houma

HOUMA, La. -- Law enforcement agents killed a man who pointed a gun at them following a chase in Houma, Louisiana State Police said.

The incident happened on Woodlawn Ranch Road near the intersection of Hwy. 56, Troop C spokesman Evan Harrell said.

State police, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office and Houma Police Department were involved, he added.

The shooting happened following a vehicle pursuit that began with a theft, Harrell said.

Officers were able to slash the man's tires with a deflation device, but police say the man exited the vehicle and pointed his gun toward the officers. The officers then shot and killed him, according to police.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene. He hasn't been identified.

As the investigation is in its early stages, it's not clear which officer killed the man.

Louisiana State Police is handling the investigation of the shooting.
