A teen was killed and her sister injured seriously Wednesday night after they were knocked off the tailgate of a pickup in a crash along an Assumption Parish highway, police said today.
Sydny Landry, 15, of Belle Rose, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m., State Police Troop C said. Camie Landry, 12, was taken by Air Med helicopter to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.
The crash occurred on La. 1000 near La. 1002 in Assumption Parish, police said.
Frannie Landry, 38, of Belle Rose was driving a 2003 GMC Sierra near the driveway of her house, carrying garbage cans to the highway with the two teens riding on the tailgate, police said.
Landry was stopped, facing east in the westbound lane of La. 1000. Corey Crochet, 21, also of Belle Rose, was headed west in a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup. Crochet turned his truck in an effort to avoid a head-on collision but struck Landry’s pickup, Troop C said in a news release.
Impairment is not suspected. Both Landry and Crochet submitted a breath sample, and no alcohol was present. Landry and Crochet were uninjured. Police said the crash remains under investigation.
