NEW ORLEANS – Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Wednesday morning in New Orleans East.
It was first reported around 8:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of Maple Ridge Drive.
Fire officials said when they arrived, a two home had heavy smoke and fire was already through the roof. Shortly after firefighters arrived, they said the homeowner told firefighter he and his fiancee had escaped, and their children were at school. However, one of the two family dogs died in the fire. The other dog was found safe in the backyard, said officials.
Authorities said the fire was under control within 45 minutes and the home did have working smoke alarms. Fifteen NOFD units responded and 37 firefighters assisted.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
