One person of interest has been taken into custody.

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Police Department responded to a shooting where one person is dead and five others are left injured in the 9th Ward.

The shooting occurred near Forstall Street and Burgundy Street around 7:45 p.m. NOPD said officers received a call about several men running around the area with guns. According to NOPD Fifth District Commander Frank Young, officers heard gunfire as they were getting out of their police units once they responded to the scene.

NOPD says that one woman and five men were shot. One of the five men died at the scene. According to Young, the victims' ages range from 24 to 30 and the five others who were shot have injuries that are not life threatening.

Young said that there was an alleged disagreement that led to the shooting.

Officers were aware that a group was holding an event in the area after a funeral in New Orleans East and were just blocks away when the shooting occurred, Young said.

Police say they have one person of interest in custody. Additional details have not been released at this time.

Police also responded to a separate shooting where one person has died in the 3300 block of General Myers in Algiers. According to NOPD, officers found a 29-year-old man on the ground with gunshot wounds.
