NOPD: Man arrested for attempting to steal steam roller from construction site

NEW ORLEANS-  The New Orleans Police Department arrested a man for allegedly attempting to steal a steam roller.

Around 4 a.m. on August 11, officers responded to a call of a suspicious person who was seen driving a CAT Vibratory Asphalt Compactor, commonly known as a steam roller. The steam roller was driven from a closed construction site at Chef Menteur Highway and Michould Boulevard.

When officers arrived on scene, a man, identified as 33-year-old Travis Campbell, was ordered to get off the steam roller. He told officers that he was an employee and was told to refuel it and other vehicles on site. Officers contacted the construction company to verify his statement and were told by the owner that Campbell had not worked for the company for several years, according to NOPD.

The owner told officers that Campbell failed to return the equipment keys after his employment was terminated.

NOPD says Campbell did not say what his plans were with the stolen steam roller.

He was arrested and booked for theft.
