Gravel truck plunges off I-55 into water; family rescued

Ashley Rodrigue has a noon update after a gravel truck plunged off of I-55 and into the water after being cut off by a pickup truck.

RUDDOCK, La. - An 18-wheel gravel truck crashed off of I-55 northbound near Ruddock and went into the water, after being cut off by a pickup truck around 9:30 a.m., according to State Police.

Witnesses said Good Samaritans pulled a woman and child from the water. In all, three members of a family were taken from the water and all were said to be safe, though suffering from mild to moderate injuries.

State Police are looking for a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer and cut off the gravel truck, sending it over the railing to the water below.

Traffic was temporarily halted on I-55 northbound between Old U.S. 51 and Manchac. Traffic was flowing again by 10:45 a.m.

Northshore Bureau Chief Ashley Rodrigue is on the scene and will have updates on WWLTV.com and a live report on Eyewitness News at Noon.
