PONCHATOULA, La. -- A 34-year-old man has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with a shooting on May 23. Ponchatoula Police announced the arrest of Rashad Evans.

According to police, on May 23, a police officer saw two men on North Baronne Street, and as the officer approached the men, he noticed one man was bleeding while the second man fled.  The officer gave chase, but quickly returned to the bleeding man.

The bleeding man, later identified as Greg McGary, was taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the face. A day later, McGary died Friday evening from the shooting, according to police.

Police later identified Evans as a possible suspect and arrested him on outstanding warrants, and several days later, police "were able to gather additional information to link Rashad Evans with the murder of Greg McGary. The detectives were able to locate Evans’ clothing from the night of the shooting, as well as the possible murder weapon. The detectives believe that it was an attempted armed robbery that led to the shooting death of McGary," Ponchatoula police said in a statement.

The homicide is the first in over five years, according to Ponchatoula police.
