MONTEPELIER, LA – An 18-year-old man was killed when the pickup he was riding in as a passenger flipped several times after running off the road early Friday morning in St. Helena Parish.
According to the State Police, Dylan Edler of Ponchatoula was pronounced dead at the scene after being partially ejected from the pickup. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.
A State Police spokesman said the truck, driven by 31-year-old Brandon Hymel of New Hampshire, was traveling east on LA 1036 when it failed to handle a left turn and the tires of the pickup went off the road to the right. Police said Hymel overcorrected and it caused the truck to rotate around and run off the road, striking a culvert and flipping several times.
State Police said Hymel was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. They said he submitted to a blood test and was found to be over the legal limit.
He was arrested on charges of careless operation, DWI and vehicular homicide.
