KENTWOOD, La. - Two people died on Friday after an 18-wheeler collided with a turning vehicle on LA 38 East in Kentwood, according to Troop L of the Louisiana State Police.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Elizabeth Pittman, 66, had stopped her 2005 Lincoln sedan in the eastbound lane as she prepared to make a left turn into a private drive.

An 18-wheeler, driven by Stennis Taylor, 50, did not notice Pittman’s car was stopped and was fast approaching the rear of her car.

He attempted to avoid rear-end impact by swerving into the left lane at the same time Pittman began to turn left.

The 18-wheeler was driven into the left side of the car, killing two passengers, Lorina Smith, 74, and Catherine Simmons, 73, in the back seat, police said. They were not wearing seatbelts and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Pittman and her front seat passenger, Carol Gill, 70, were wearing seatbelts and were airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. They both remain in serious condition at the hospital, police said.

Taylor was wearing a seatbelt and received no injuries, according to police. He was booked in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on two charges each of negligent homicide and negligent injury.

Alcohol and drug impairment is not suspected, according to police.
