State Police suspect that the driver killed in a crash while going the wrong way on I-12 was impaired at the time.
According to the Louisiana State Police, 55-year-old Perry J. Nunez died after crashing head-on into an 18-wheeler while driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-12 in Covingron.
The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. According to LSP, Nunez was driving a 2002 Buick Century eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-12 when his vehicle crashed into a 2001 Freightliner driven by 37-year-old Justin Lamar Flood.
Despite wearing his seatbelt, Nunez was fatally injured in the crash and died on the scene.
Troopers suspect Nunez was impaired at the time of the crash, according to LSP. The investigation is ongoing and blood samples are being analyzed.
Flood was not injured in the crash. Police say Flood was tested on the scene and showed no signs of alcohol. A passenger in Flood's vehcile, 20-year-old Jaquan Lamar Flood, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
