Shooting victim in Hammond becomes city's first murder of 2017

HAMMOND, La. -- A 27-year-old man who shot Tuesday has died and the incident is now classified as a homicide, according to the Hammond Police Department.

Around 1 a.m., Demarkius Jackson, of Hammond, was shot near the intersection of East David Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Responding officers found Jackson inside a vehicle at the location. He had been shot multiple times, police said.

He was taken to North Oaks Medical Center, where he died around 10:30 p.m. on Mar. 7.

"As background, Jackson was involved in a shooting incident on December 29, 2016 when he fatally shot Martin Baker, 24 years old from Hammond, during an argument.  Detectives suspect this shooting may be in retaliation for killing Baker since Jackson was cleared and the shooting was deemed justifiable," said a statement from police.
