MANDEVILLE- An overhaul is underway at 800 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. The old Casa Garcia Restaurant is becoming Teen Crush Club, a hangout for 12 to 16-year-olds opening this weekend.
"All the friends can get together, and they have a lot of stuff to do," said Manager Alexis Cascio, "We'll sell concessions, we're going to have a game room as soon as we get further into the opening and we have good music, security and a really good environment."
The venture spawned from a lack of gathering places for tweens and teens. Developers are using music and dancing as the draw for kids, with police monitors and a security team as the pull for parents.
Eyewitness News went to social media to see what you think about a teen club coming to Mandeville. Many of you said it's a good idea to have something for kids, but there were questions. Some comments expressed concern about the age gap, some about the level of security regarding kids coming and going, and others about oversight of activity inside.
"I feel like either way kids congregate with their own age group," said Cascio, "And like I said earlier we do have really good security and we also have police that's going to be all over the place too."
Parents we talked to say that plan is okay with them.
"We live in a great, safe community over here and there's nothing for kids to do over here of that age," said Bobby Couvillon, who has a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old, "As long as it's controlled and overseen, I'm really open for it."
Matthew Wilkinson, who has a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old, said, "For them to have some place to go that we can be confident that they're going to be there, stay there, we can drop them off, pick them up, I think would be a good idea."
The community, and the kids in it, will set the bar for Teen Crush Club starting Friday night.
The club plans to open Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. until Midnight, with a $10 cover charge.
