New Jersey man killed in wreck on I-10 in Slidell

SLIDELL, La. – Troopers are investigating a crash on I-10 West that left one New Jersey man dead and two others injured.

It happened around 2 p.m. on I-10 West near Old Spanish Trail.

Troopers believe a Chevrolet SUV, driven by 66-year-old Milton Frank of Lacombe, was going eastbound on I-10. LSP said at the time of the crash, it was wet and raining heavily. Frank lost control of the SUV, crossing through the median and into the westbound lanes of I-10. The SUV was hit head-on by a 2016 BMW 328i driven by Steven Fernandez, of Bergenfield, New Jersey. After the crash with the BMW, the SUV was hit be a second car, a 2002 Honda Accord, driven by 24-year-old Irvin Darensbourg of New Orleans.

Troopers said although Fernandez had a seatbelt on, he died of his injuries in the wreck.

Danielle Carballeira, a 26-year-old Statin Island, NY resident, was a front seat passenger in the BMW. Carballeira and Frank, the driver of the Tahoe, both has seatbelts on at the time of the crash. They both sustained moderate injuries in the crash and were each transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Troopers do not believe alcohol or impairment was a factor in this crash.
