Theft suspect leads deputies on high-speed chase in Slidell

SLIDELL, La. -- A Slidell man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he stole a car and attempted to run away from police.

Authorities said a deputy was patrolling Thompson Road near Slidell when he saw a green Chevrolet Camaro with black racing stripes driving over 100 miles per hour. The Camaro matched the description of a stolen car out of Jefferson Parish.

Deputies said 36-year-old Stephen Alger ran a red light at Thompson Road and Gause Boulevard, then drove into an open field. He stopped driving after striking several trees, authorities said. After Alger wrecked the Camaro, deputies said he tried to run. They added was found by a police K-9 and arrested.

Alger was brought to Louisiana Heart Hospital and received treatment for a dog bite. After being released from the hospital, Alger was booked into the St.Tammany Parish Jail.

Alger faces numerous charges, including possession of stolen things and resisting an officer.

Authorities said he may face additional charges with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
