ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. – After a two-hour meeting, parish council members approved the next step that could lead to an increase in tolls across the Causeway Bridge Thursday night.
Out of the 14 total council members, four voted against the move, and one recused their vote.
The bond would partially pay for improvements to the bridge, including raising the railing on the southbound span and adding staggered emergency shoulders.
Now, the same approval has to come from the Jefferson Parish council, before a final acceptance by the state bond commission.
As of Thursday, there is no timeframe on when Jefferson Parish will consider the item. If Jefferson Parish says no, the entire project dies.
If the plan makes it to the state bond commission and gets approved, a toll increase will be enacted.
