Wrong way Causeway driver startles motorists early Saturday

A car was captured going southbound on the northbound Causeway early Sunday.

MANDEVILLE, La. -- It was a strange and scary sight for Causeway drivers early Saturday, April 8, as a driver drove her vehicle for a few miles in the wrong direction before being stopped by police.

In a video posted by viewer Jake Ruby, you can see the vehicle heading southbound on the northbound span. The person who shot the video said it happened around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. You will also see  two police vehicles pass the person who had video of the event.

Ruby said police tried to stop the driver at the first crossover, but that the car blew past the attempt.

A report on the event identified the driver as 23-year-old Elena Svob. She was booked with one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having an expired license plate and aggravated obstruction of a highway.

The report stated Svob's vehicle was traveling approximately 63 miles per hour. A first attempt to stop the vehicle at the first crossover ended when the officer decided that the vehicle was not slowing down and moved the unit to the right lane to avoid a crash.

Spike strips were deployed at the second crossover and apparently flattened two of the three tires, however the vehicle continued moving until a few police vehicles boxed it in.

The report said the officer who came into contact with Svob, "observed glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and swaying. The report said the officer detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage."
