One woman killed, one injured in crash near LaPlace

LAPLACE, La. -- A single-car crash took the life of one woman and seriously injured another woman, according to State Police.

Around 12:30 p.m., Markesha Williams, 27, of LaPlace, was driving east on Interstate 10 near LA 3188 when she lost control of the car, went off the road and hit a message board.

Williams was transported to a local hospital where she later died, and the passenger, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

It is unknown if either of them were wearing seat belts, and impairment is unknown and a toxicology test is pending an autopsy, according to police, though troopers believe excessive speed may be a factor.  The crash remains under investigation.
