NEW ORLEANS – A 23-year-old woman died on the Fourth of July after driving off the interstate roadway and hitting a utility pole that fell on top of her, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Just before midnight on Wednesday, she was traveling in a black Ford Explorer as she attempted to exit I-10 West at the West End exit.
For unknown reasons she left the roadway, struck a wall and subsequently struck a metal utility pole, causing the pole to detach from the base, police said. She was then ejected from the SUV and struck by the falling pole.
She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Blood and alcohol tests are pending, according to the NOPD.
