NEW ORLEANS - On Monday, the Crescent City Connection police became a force of the past in a change that will remain regardless of whether the toll extension passes or fails.
The existing police force is training to become the Louisiana Department of Public Safety police, a branch of the state police.
Training under the guidance of state police will take place in Zachary for three days, and state troopers will secure the bridge during the period.
The CCC police will return to regular duty on Monday, and they will officially become DPS police on January 1.
The transition was planned earlier in 2012 and has no connection to the outcome of the toll vote.
Officers will receive new cars and new uniforms.
The CCC Commission will also be disbanded, and DOTD will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the bridge.
